Maryellen Smolka began her career as a sign-language interpreter in 1996, and has more than 15 years� experience working with people who are deaf or hard of hearing. She has been with CUNY since 1997, and is currently a CART Provider, Initiative Leader, Trainer and Coordinator of CART services at the College of Staten Island's Multi Media Regional Center. Mrs. Smolka is a pioneer in the field; along with Nicole Dory and support from the Information Technology and Student Affairs Divisions at the campus, she developed CART services from the ground up for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. (She now not only works as a CART provider but also empowers others in her role as CART trainer.) In addition, she has developed CUNY-wide assistive technology programming and training for the various assistive technologies, and has presented at numerous conferences nationwide. Nicole and Maryellen are co-owners of "Hear-Say", established in 2008, a company that provides CART services in various educational settings both onsite and remotely.
Nicole Dory earned her degree in Information Systems and began working at the College of Staten Island in 2006, where she began training to become a CART provider for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in the post-secondary educational setting. She has helped create a standard of service and training for others since 2007. Ms. Dory was hired as a full-time Technology Assistant in 2007 and has co-developed the award-winning Remote CART services program at CSI. The service has now been implemented at many of the CUNY campuses and proven to be a cost-effective, highly regarded mandated service for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students. Nicole is certified to train others in CART and empowers other providers by supporting them in many technological environments. Nicole has researched, developed and implemented CUNY-wide programming and training for assistive technology. She has also trained both trainers and students to implement myriad utilization of different technologies to assist students with disabilities. Her efforts have been nationally and internationally recognized and has presented at numerous conferences nationwide.
